I have more than twenty years in San Diego construction. I started in the field, then built and ran Leland Construction for thirteen years. When I owned my own construction company, I was the salesperson.
In 2026 I built and ran an AI plan-reading and estimating system on live bids. A vague request is a plan set with no schedules: the framer will guess, and you pay for the guess at punch. So I scope the AI the way I scope a sub. I give it a clear scope, check the work against its sources, and make the final judgment when something is missing or the results disagree.
In some ways it's a really good employee, and in other ways it's an inexperienced one, and the work needs to be verified.
Most construction companies know they should be using AI, but figuring out where to start is difficult. Where AI can help depends on where information is getting lost or becoming difficult to use in your company. That's what I help companies find, and then I help them fix it.
